Kat Marks – London based Canadian designer who is deeply inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s novels and themes of humanity’s mysticism and its complexity. The main used materials are rigid plastic, plastic, wet-moulded vegetable tan leather bibs and tuxedo bow-ties.

- Describe yourself as a person and as a designer.
- As a person, I am quite private, reserving parts of myself only for those closest to me. As a designer, I wear my creativity on my sleeve.
- Do you see big differences between both descriptions?
- Yes and no. I am not separate from what I create – my work is a portrait so to speak, showcasing my interests and passions at the time.
- Why do you choose to be a designer?
- I didn’t – it choose me (how cliché!). But it’s the truth; there was never an alternate route I wanted to take.
- What was the first item you created?
- A 2-piece neon windbreaker track suit in the early 90’s.
- Where do you seek for inspiration?
- It usually begins with Kurt Vonnegut novel. The Karass (my most recent collection) was named after a term Vonnegut coined in his 1963 novel Cat’s Cradle.

- The items you designed are independent as an art pieces and it has a strong structure.
What do you think about boundaries, rules and expressions in visual conversation with fashion and observer?
- I don’t believe that boundaries are necessary. Boundaries, however, are often the product of a designer’s personal aesthetic and creative philosophy or by the viewer’s preconceived notions or opinions about what it being witnessed. The combination of the two makes for an interesting conversation.
- Do you have some special rituals before you start to create?
- Not really, but I need to feel passionate about the project and have 100% of my energy focused of what I’m doing.
- What are the basic values for you as for designer?
- Stay true to my nature and don’t offend anyone along the way.
- Do you still need to march and fight to get public attention?
- There is enough room for all of us in the creative world and the work should speak for it self. Having a professional website, however, and a large network is a benefit.
- Now you are based in London.
What is your experience with this city and how does it effect your creation?
- London has a saturated fashion industry – this is both positive and negative. For me, London has done exactly what I need it to do for me, which was a launch my career in the European market. Living in London also increased my network.

- Co-directing The Karass fashion film with Nick Knight for SHOWstudio.com in 2011.

- Continue creating.
