Masha Ma
- Describe yourself as a person and as a designer/label.
Do you see big differences between both descriptions?
- As a person I am quite rebellious, sharp and skeptical but not cynical. My design is feminine, chic, modern and romantic with an edge. My design seems the opposite of who I am but do share a common which is looking for perfection.
- Why do you choose to be a womenswear designer?
- I didn’t choose to be one, that’s the only thing I can do as a career. At the end of the day, I didn’t have a choice but I have to be one.
- What was the first item you created?
- That was an asymmetric cut full length black skirt out of thin cotton muslin.
- Where do you seek for inspiration?
- Text books mainly. I found reading much more inspiring than seeing images, it allows you to visual things in your own version without any misleading.
- The aesthetics of minimalism. What do you think about it?
- I think that to be minimal is the most difficult thing in the world.
- What are the basic values for you as for designer?
- Creating and delivering not just a fine product, but also a notion that reflects your surroundings.
- Do you have any difficulties being a designer?
- Time management is always an issue. There is never enough time.
- Do you still need to march and fight to get the public attention?
- You always do that but not in such literal way. I intend to complete my design better every season and try to deliver a more finished product every time, I see that’s a way of fighting, because you let people to pay attention in you because of what you do.
- Now you are based in London. Does it effect your creation somehow?
- Yes and no. I think it is very important to be honest of who you are. We just signed with Pressing in Paris, so let’s see how Paris is going to influence my design.
- Future plans, dream collaborations and hopes?
- I had collaborated with Neville Brody last year on creating an installation in Shanghai and I would love to work with someone like that again. Also I hope that I could sleep 8 hours a day every day.
